Hey Asgard! So the Darkness plot was really awesome and there was a ton of death and angst and it was awesome, right!?! So, who wants some more death and angst?

No? You’re done with death and angst?

Oh, shoot.

Bioligical Warfare: Now you’re fighting with fire-germs.

In a preliminary strike by the Fire and Ice Giants, a potent virus is released on the city. Combining the worst aspects of chemical and magical warfare, the virus quickly spreads effecting both Traveller and NPC Citizen. Quarantine districts are set up in an attempt to contain the disease. Travellers have the ability to make an immunization and check this before it envelops the entire city. Once the immunization is distributed, the spread of the disease will slow, eventually petering out entirely.

This plot!event is likely to be high-intensity as this isn’t an opponent that can be fought physically, and even characters with healing powers will find that they can alleviate symptoms but not fully cure them. Feeling powerless and unable to do anything while their friends and loved ones suffer does take a toll, and to counter that, I’d like people to start thinking about things their characters can do to counter this now.

In the Darkness event we saw Rachel trying to raise spirits through song; perhaps the Glee cast could make a collective effort to raise spirits, other characters contributing by reading stories out loud over the bracelets, or thinking of other ways to keep spirits up while trapped in Quarantine, or in hospital. Fighters might station themselves at the entrances to the city, looking out for signs of a planned invasive attack or might try to enforce the quarantine or even just protect the hospitals from frightened NPC citizens who think the answer to keeping the virus spreading as simple as razing the hospital to the ground. Characters with growth could speed up the growth of herbs that can be used to alleviate the suffering of those infected, and characters with drawing life can produce supplies for the hospital. Naturally healers and those with medical knowledge will have a lot to contribute, but as they will quickly be exposed to the virus, it is likely that other characters will have to step up to fill in the gaps as their ranks decrease. Characters with ice magic may find they are in high demand for cooling water and towels distributed to patients. I’m sure that you’ll have ideas of your own, please feel free to share them below!

Opt-out: Not something you want to be apart of? Totally cool! I’m worried that this might be a little hard to ignore given the nature of this plot event, so I’m going to suggest that a sight-seeing/trading/general information getting trip to Utgard is organized and launched about the same time as the virus goes down. A bit extreme, but it’s the only possibility coming to mind for me right now. If you have other ideas, please let us know below!

Timeline:

Morning Day 147 (September 21): The Dragon that flew over the city to deliver the Fire Giant King’s declaration of War is back. This time, instead of starting fires, he drops three canisters on the city, the canisters landing in a populated part of District 1, 2 and 3. The canisters open upon impact, releasing a strange rust coloured cloud. It is odourless, but those that inhale it may notice that it tastes ‘funny.’ The cloud dissipates after about an hour. Examination of the canisters reveal them to be crafted with methods and materials readily available to the Fire Giants, but give no clue as to their contents. Perhaps it is an experimental incendiary device gone wrong?

Afternoon/Evening Day 147 (September 21-22): Characters (and NPCs) exposed to the rust-coloured smoke develop a persistent cough that quickly causes throats to become raw and painful. Accompanying fevers and feelings of nausea and dizziness soon follow, the severity depending upon factors such as the length of time the character was exposed to the smoke, their age and health (very young, elderly or unwell characters will be more adversely effected). Strange marks, similar to burn marks, start appearing on their bodies. Hospital staff will find themselves unexpectedly busy, but the number of patients is at this point enough for the hospital to manage. Magical healing and medicine can alleviate symptoms temporarily, but do nothing to get rid of the cause, offering only a temporary respite. These patients are Wave 1.

Morning Day 148 (September 23): Wave 1 patients continue to worsen rapidly, coughing up blood, slipping in and out of consciousness as their condition declines. They complain of feeling as though they’re being consumed from within by fire, and their ‘burn’ marks blister and worsen. Hospital staff are taxed to keep up, particularly as Wave 2 patients start developing the early symptoms of the infection.

At this point characters may realise they face an outbreak and begin looking for ways to manufacture a immunization. The hospital has the technology and if necessary NPC know-how to do this, though I am hoping that our PC’s will step up!

Unfortunately, symptoms are starting to spread throughout the city and panic breaks out among NPC citizens who remember only too well how the Greyness spread throughout the city. People leaving the hospital may find they need an escort and anyone who coughs or has burn-like marks on themselves may find themselves turned out of NPC buildings, shunned or even have objects hurled at them. Quarantine houses may be suggested and put into practice; fighters find themselves called on to go to the assistance of beleaguered healers and unlucky infected caught out in the open.

Afternoon/Evening/Night Day 148 (September 23 -24)
The first Wave 1 deaths occur. Characters that survive this crisis however, will find their symptoms slowly abating although they will be very weak and their recovery will take time. At this point, healing powers will be able to restore them completely and the burns can be left to fade on their own or be healed magically. In addition, their blood can be used to make an effective immunisation able to prevent more deaths. The hospital is struggling to keep up with patients, especially as healers who have pushed their powers to the limits helping others and exhausted volunteers are more susceptible, joining the other Wave 2 patients.

The immunization is distributed, needing volunteers to take it over the city and perhaps an escort of fighters depending on how citizens react. Where distributed, the immunization is very effective.

Morning Day 149 (September 25)

Wave 1 patients that have recovered are able to minister to the Wave 2 (and 3) patients but the possession of the immunization greatly reduces the severity of symptoms. The severity of Wave 2 patients’ symptoms depends on the state they’re in when the immunization is administered. Deaths may still occur but the rate is fewer and for most recovery is faster. Wave 3 patients administered the immunization will find their symptoms fade almost immediately.

Note: This is an attack on the city. These deaths count towards a character’s death tally and citizens who succumb will not return. ☹ Yeah, Fire Giants kind of suck.

OOC stuffs!:
To keep the plot moving quickly, I’d like to ask for volunteers to make sure the various stages of the plot happen, and back up volunteers in case something comes up and people need to take an immediate break (A bit OCD, I know, but I think that keeping this event moving quickly will counteract some of the angst, and hopefully having plans in case of people getting busy will help make this non-stress for everyone involved). Watson will be involved in making the immunization, but I’d like a volunteer to lead the post, with Watson as back up/support. Likewise, I can write up general hospital logs for each day of the event, but the distribution of the immunization will need a volunteer and back-up volunteer, realisation that the virus is caused by the canisters and the formation of a plan will need a volunteer and back-up volunteer.
